Banff's Share and Repair Fair

The Town of Banff and Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley invite you to the Banff Share and Repair Fair on Sunday, October 20, 2024 from 10am- 2pm at the Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre.

What is a Share and Repair Fair? This is a FREE community event that promotes circular economy and waste reduction through free repair, share and reuse services, workshops, and presentations. We are featuring 10-20 local businesses and organizations that support reuse, repair, recycling, upcycling and sharing in Banff.

What will the day look like? Drop in throughout the day to explore over 10+ booths of local businesses and organizations that will help you learn, explore or repair your bicycle, technology, clothes, gear and more! Attend a free workshop or presentation every hour (20 minutes long)!
Free live music, light snacks, refreshments and prizes!

FREE Workshop Schedule:
10:30 AM - 11:00 AM - Bike Maintenance 101: How to Patch an Inner Tube (Community Cruisers) Community Cruisers has a vision that people of all ages, abilities and financial means are comfortable choosing cycling as their preferred way of getting around the Bow Valley! Join us for a demonstration on how to patch an inner tube. Participants will get patch kits and have the opportunity to practice patching a tube!

11:00 AM - 11:30 AM - What Happens to Our Waste? (Bow Valley Waste Commission) Did you know that the Francis Cooke Landfill receives around 80% of the waste generated in the Bow Valley (mostly from construction sites)? The Bow Valley Waste Commission is able to divert around 60% of this waste through a range of resource recovery, recycling and composting programs! Learn more about how they do this, what happens to our waste, and how we can support the circular economy in the Bow Valley with Andrew Cotterell!

12:00 PM - 12:30 PM - Stitch by Stitch: Intro to Embroidery (The Last Temptation) Thrifting is a great way to contribute to a circular economy and prevent clothing from going into the waste stream! Banff’s infamous vintage and second-hand store, The Last Temptation, repairs items and also sells a variety of fun fashion finds! Join them at this workshop to learn a simple embroidery technique. Don’t forget to check out their free clothing swap throughout the day at the fair!

12:30 PM - 1:00 PM - Wear, Wash and Repeat! (Patagonia) Patagonia is a trailblazing pioneer in the domain of sustainable fashion. With the vision of “creating a line that never ended up in a landfill”, Patagonia’s quest for circularity includes striving towards ethical supply chains and transparency, increasing longevity of products, focusing on environmental responsibility and offering repair services and programmes for their products. Join this workshop to learn about taking care of waterproof and technical garments. Wear, wash, repeat.

1:00 PM - 1:30 PM - Preserve, Revive and Regenerate Your Grocery List (Bow Valley Food Alliance) The Bow Valley Food Alliance’s vision is to foster community-based food systems that are equitable and ecologically-regenerative, resulting in food sovereignty for all of the diverse communities in the Bow Valley. Join the Bow Valley Food Alliance to learn different ways of preserving, reviving and regenerating your groceries list.

And above all, continue to build on the town’s rich heritage as a source of enchantment and renewal for others…always. The town already has several notable circular initiatives such as a reuse-it centre, organic collection, and the Banff Food Rescue, and we seek to promote these further!

What is a circular economy? Circular economy is based on the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.
