Join Paul McKendrick and Ed Whittingham at the Canmore Public Library for their presentation Scrubbing the Sky of Carbon Dioxide - an hour of discussion on removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in order to meet widely accepted climate targets.
This Earth Talks event, in partnership with the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley, will take place on Monday February 27th, 2023 in the Friends Program Room at 7:00pm. Registration is required - please see below to reserve your spot.
About Scrubbing the Sky of Carbon Dioxide:
For the world to meet widely accepted climate targets, whether that be a 1.5- or 2-degree Celsius long-term temperature rise, it is virtually certain that carbon dioxide will need to be removed from the atmosphere. To accomplish this feat, carbon removal technologies are being developed that will offset emissions to help get to net zero carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.
This talk will highlight one carbon removal technology, direct air capture, including the following:
A brief synopsis of how it has been developed
An overview of the support its currently receiving
A discussion of what its future looks like
About the Speakers:
Paul McKendrick is the author of “Scrubbing the Sky: Inside the Race to Cool the Planet.” He previously worked in Alberta’s energy sector as a partner in a firm dedicated to developing and financing renewable energy projects, in addition to stints in the electric utility sector, the oil and gas sector and investment banking.
Ed Whittingham is a co-host of Energy vs. Climate, a leading podcast that explores the tradeoffs and realities of the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables. He is the former executive director of the Pembina Institute, a national think tank supporting Canada's clean energy transition, and has worked to advance climate and energy policy—including for carbon removal—for two decades. Ed is also a highly experienced public speaker, and his op-eds have been published in newspapers and magazines across Canada and internationally.
